Axiom Mission 4: Dragon capsule Grace returns to Earth

The Ax-4 astronauts have returned to Earth after a 22.5-hour journey back from the International Space Station (ISS) where they spent 18 days. The Dragon capsule Grace carrying crew splashed down off the coast of California at approximately 4:31 am CT.

Axiom Mission 4 is a private crewed spaceflight to the ISS operated by Axiom Space in partnership with SpaceX and NASA. It is the fourth private astronaut mission of Axiom Space to the ISS. This was launched atop a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket on 25 June 2025 UTC, which placed the SpaceX Crew Dragon Grace spacecraft into low Earth orbit. The crew transport capsule Dragon is developed by SpaceX under NASA’s Commercial Crew Program for transporting astronauts to and from the ISS. The Dragon capsule Grace travelled to the International Space Station (ISS) carrying four private astronauts and docked with the Harmony zenith docking port of the ISS on 26 June 2025. The private astronauts Peggy Whitson, Shubhanshu Shukla, Sławosz Uznański-Wiśniewski and Tibor Kapu. spent 18 days aboard the orbiting laboratory, conducting a mission comprised of science, outreach, and commercial activities.

Axiom Space, Inc. is an American private company that provides human spaceflight services, including missions to the International Space Station (ISS) and the development of the first commercial space station, Axiom Station including services like astronaut training, mission planning, hardware development, and on-orbit operations to people, corporations, and space agencies. It is a contractor for NASA. In 2020, NASA awarded Axiom Space a contract to develop and attach commercial modules to the ISS, which, in future, will detach from the ISS and form Axiom Station, a privately owned space station in low Earth orbit.

In order to build expertise and infrastructure for the commercial space sector, NASA has partnered with Axiom Space also for private astronaut missions to the ISS and for developing spacesuits for use on the ISS.

Space Exploration Technologies Corp., commonly known as SpaceX is an American private space technology company which provides crew transportation services to and from ISS under NASA’s Commercial Crew Program. It recently concluded SpaceX Crew-9 mission. SpaceX Crew-10 mission is currently underway and Crew-11 is to be launched shortly.

NASA’s Commercial Crew Program (CCP) provides for commercially operated human crew transportation services to and from the International Space Station (ISS) by private providers on a fixed-price contract to NASA.

Purchasing astronaut transportation services to and from International Space Station (ISS) from private providers enables NASA to focus on developing spacecrafts and vehicles for deep space human missions to Mars with basecamp at the Moon under Artemis Programme.

International Space Station (ISS) is important for understanding challenges of long duration spaceflights for deep space missions.
